Vol15. The highest mountain in Canada, Mt.

The panorama view from the peak of Mt. Logan

カナダ部分で1450km(日本の本州と同じぐらい)、アメリカにも伸びる巨大な山脈です。

Hey guys, this will be my very first post as a member of the team link up. Hope you guys will enjoy.

Okay, let's get down to the story about mountains. I believe Canadian Rockies are the first thing when you think about the most popular mountains in Canada but have you known that there are millions of other mountains in Canada?

In the picture below, The red line is Canadian Rockies (Close to Calgary and ranging over the Banff,Lake louise and Jasper) Rocky mountains are ranging between Canada and the States and even the length of Canadian side is as long as 1450km-alsmost same length as mainland of Japan!! The blue is Columbia mountains including Rogers pass and Revelstoke, the yellow is Coast mountains including Whistler and Waddington. Lastly Saint Elias mountains in the green circle which includes Mt.Logan.

Although not all of the mountains are well known, a lot of mountain ranges exist in Canada and one person can't climb all of them in his/her lifetime.

Today's story is about the Mt. Logan, the highest mountain in Canada and the second highest mountain next to Mt.Denali in North American continent. Actually, all of the highest mountains between 1 and 18 in Canada are all located in the Saint Elias mountains.
Even mountains have 3000m are still in the glaciers.

I remember that I was completely mesmerized by the scale of the Canadian Rockies when I first saw them but the surprise brought to me by the Cluanie National Park was way more than that.
The continuous ridges of the mountains of over 5000m last more than 20 km. Throughout a year the average temperature is negative 27 C. It even possess the record of hitting negative 77.5 C.

In order to have an image what it looks like to climb Mt.Logan, I would say it is almost same type of climbing style required in Mt.Denali. However, the major differences in comparison to Mt.Denali are that there are only 20-30 people climbing annually so there are no rangers nor doctors posted there and solitude you feel.

As it is located in the middle of the huge glaciers, getting there by foot is impossible. So the only way is the use of sesna. It costs $1050 (2010) and if you are flying from Canada, Icefield Discovery would be the only choice.
The sesna used for my trip

After getting off the sesna, we used sled and ski. Sled is for carrying items that didn't fit to our backpacks. This style is called mountaineering and the use of ski will be called ski mountaineering. Now you can easily guess that climbing Mt.Logan requires skiing skills.
I recommend you to have 3 weeks for the trip but just in case that sesna doesn't fly, bringing 4 weeks' amount of food is a smart idea.
There are multiple routes leading to the peak, this time I used the king trench route which is the normal routes when I tried in 2010.

When it comes to climbing expedition in North America, people would think about Mt. Denali at first but it can be quite busy sometimes. Close to 1000 climbers are heading to the peak of Mt.Denali annually. On the other hand, there were only 3-5 groups of about 50 people at the time in Mt.Logan. With the high altitude and having to climb on the glaciers all the time, it wouldn't be the easy climbing trip yet I still highly recommend you to consider trying Mt. Logan as a next step to the Mt.Denali.
Millions of ceases are waiting for you.

Vol 13.

Vol.14 On the other side of Mt. Asahi

Hey guys, this week's story is by Chiharu about the mountains in Hokkaido, Mt. Syou-haku-un(1966m) and Mt.Syou-asahi(1654m). Although these mountains have got their names, they just look like a bump next to Mt. Haku-un and  Mt. Asahi respectively. Also they are not that obvious nor there are maintained hiking paths so I assume there is few people coming to hike these mountains.

The high mountain on the left is Mt.Haku-un and the triangle shaped mountain on the right is Mt. Syou-haku-un.

This is Mt.Syou-asahi and you can't see Mt.Asahi in this photo above but it sits right next to Mt.Syou-asahi.

We headed up the ski hill of Mt. Asahi and traversed to the other side of the Mt. Asahi through the skirt. There were a few times that you have to cross the valleys on the way and if you try in the late of the season, you may find yourself struggling quite a bit because of the melt snow. So I strongly recommend to try while there are still plenty of snow left in the area.

Heading up while seeing the Banno-sawa area on your side. This area is accessible from ski hill so the traces can be found everywhere.

Passing the mountains, crossing the valleys and heading into the deep mountains.

In a gorgeous day like this the mountains farther away can be seen.
Love the feeling of leaving fresh trace behind!
Even if some sort of mishaps happens,it dries fast under the good weather condition so no need to worry about.
It's still winter in the mountains.

The last section of our way heading up was quite icy so we were geared up with crampons.

The upper part of Mt.Syouasahi was still pretty icy so I would say that there are not so much places to ski in the area. It might be more fun trying again when it gets a little warmer. However, skiing is not the only thing you can do in mountains in winter. Putting on a ski boots and making your way down deep in mountains in a beautiful day,you will be amazed by the silent and majestic faces of true nature.
Once spring arrives, the snow will be melt, the valley opens its mouth and you might encounter new bushes heading their way to the surface. After all those change occurs it will be difficult to ski anymore until next season. This mountain is easily accessed under the winter condition so I took an advantage of precious winter time to enjoy the last bit.

Lastly, I will insert a photo of my memory.
カナダの最高峰 Mt.Logan(5959m)もこの中にあります。

A photo of Kluane National Park located between the border of Alaska and Canada. The excitement I felt after the long boring drive and finally got to see the scraggy mountains was unforgettable. The highest mountain in Canada Mt.Logan (5959m) sits inside these mountains.

Thanks for reading, Hope you guys enjoyed!
